Counting Crows - Mr Jones
Who is Mr. Jones you ask? The mystery got solved many years ago, when Counting Crows frontman Adam Duritz finally fessed up to the song’s namesake as being a friend of Adam’s, bassist Marty Jones. The magical night of inspiration for the song was one in which Adam and Marty had gone out to a bar and observed another musician who was amazingly trying to pick up three women at the same time. Adam mused that maybe if they were famous rock stars, talking to women would finally get easier. You’ll have to remember as well that at one point Adam was dating Courtney Cox, so, yes, I guess it got easier.
Also if you want to go Easter Egg hunting, the character of Maria in this song appears in many Counting Crows tracks, as a Flamenco Dancer, as someone traveling from Nashville, as someone “in every song I sing,” so you’ll hear her name quite a bit. The origin of Maria, or whether she’s an actual person at all or just a concept is much harder to track down than the identity of Mr. Jones. Some things are more fun unsolved.
