4 Non Blondes: What’s Up?

This video just hit a BILLION Youtube views so thought we could celebrate it today.

For songwriting extraordinaire Linda Perry (who would go on to write hit songs for Pink, Christina Aguilera and more), “What’s Up” came together so effortlessly, she thought she was plagiarizing someone else. According to bandmate Christa Hillhouse, Linda played constantly and often wrote songs easily, without getting bogged down about structure, instead, she let it all come out, directly from the heart.

For context, the band was breaking down barriers in the 90’s. They were all female and openly gay, which was still taboo and what many record labels were concerned would be a career killer. It was actually fame and success that killed off 4 Non Blondes. After selling five million records with “What’s Up,” the business pressures upon them were too much and the band split up.

Maybe a silly little note on the song, but it’s called “What’s Up,” and not “What’s Going On,” which is what Linda actually sings in the chorus. The reason for this is simple; they didn’t want the same song title as a Marvin Gaye classic.
