Here’s your 90’s Video of the Day: Garbage - Stupid Girl

Because we love ‘em all. Here’s your 90’s Video of the Day

Garbage - Stupid Girl

Even though Shirley Manson’s lyrical cutthroat wit alludes to this song being written about one singular person, or girl, it’s not necessarily the case. (Inspired by, yes), but ultimately its meaning broadened as Shirley start to put it together. To quote Shirley, “the song is really about squandering potential,” so it easily could have been called “Stupid Boy.”

Starting with the Clash’s “Train In Vain,” for a drum inspiration was a formula for success that then only took the members of Garbage about thirty minutes to complete. Garbage seem to be a little more savvy than some of of the other 90’s artists we’ve featured here and knew in advance to give Mick Jones and Joe Strummer writing credits on the song. It was a smart decision, because the song got a ton of attention and got them nominated for a Grammy and MTV Video Music Awards in America and Europe.

Samuel Bayer directed this video and the effect in the video is achieved by purposely destroying the actual rolls of footage with a combination of water and cigarettes. He’s the mastermind behind Nirvana’s “Smells Like Teen Spirit.” I always thought it was on the soundtrack for the horror film Seven, but I was wrong—-however Bayer did admit that the opening of the video took stylistic elements of Seven so I feel less silly about that now.
