Bob Weir, a founding member of iconic rock band Grateful Dead, has died at the age of 78.

According a lengthy post on his Instagram, it was confirmed that Weir passed away on Saturday, January 10th due to underlying lung issues. The message stated that the rocker, "transitioned peacefully, surrounded by loved ones, after courageously beating cancer as only Bobby could. Unfortunately, he succumbed to underlying lung issues," and went on to describe him as "a guitarist, vocalist, storyteller, and founding member of the Grateful Dead."

The post also gave a look at Weir's final months, explaining, "Bobby’s final months reflected the same spirit that defined his life. Diagnosed in July, he began treatment only weeks before returning to his hometown stage for a three-night celebration of 60 years of music at Golden Gate Park. Those performances, emotional, soulful, and full of light, were not farewells, but gifts. Another act of resilience. An artist choosing, even then, to keep going by his own design."

Weir is survived by his wife, Natascha Münter, and daughters, Monet and Chloe, the latter of who took the photo posted along with the note to fans. His family has requested privacy during this difficult time while expressing gratitude for the support and remembrance from fans.

Weir's career began in 1965 when he helped form the Grateful Dead in Palo Alto, California. Known for his distinctive rhythm guitar style, Weir contributed to the band's massive success. The Grateful Dead received numerous accolades, including a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2007 and induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1994.

After the Grateful Dead, Weir continued to celebrate the band's legacy through Dead & Company, formed in 2015. He collaborated with musicians like John Mayer, who praised Weir's musical inventiveness. The group recently completed a successful residency at Las Vegas' Sphere venue, showcasing the band's rich catalog.
