Andrew Ranken, founding drummer and self-described "heartbeat" of the iconic punk band The Pogues, has died at age 72, the band confirmed Wednesday, February 11th.
The band announced Ranken's passing in a heartfelt statement on social media, saying: It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Andrew Ranken, drummer, founding member, and heartbeat of The Pogues. Andrew, thank you for everything, for your friendship, your wit and your generosity of spirit, and of course for the music, forever a true friend and brother. Our thoughts and love are with his family at this sad and difficult time."
The band noted that Ranken died on Tuesday, February 10th, with no cause of death revealed.
Affectionately nicknamed "The Clobberer," Ranken was a vital part of The Pogues from their formation in 1983 until 1996, before rejoining from 2001 until 2014. Beyond drumming, he contributed vocals, percussion, and harmonica to the band known for hits like "Fairytale of New York."
Ranken's death follows the passing of other key Pogues members in recent years. Frontman Shane MacGowan died in November 2023 at age 65 after being hospitalized for an infection, while bassist Darryl Hunt passed away in 2022, also at age 72.
Fans have been quick to share tributes online, with one writing: "The world is running out of Pogues, and that's very sad. RIP." Another added: "Oh no, what sad news. So sorry for him and his family and the band. He was such a musical force, and from what I've read, quite the stand-up guy."
Outside of The Pogues, the London-born musician also performed with bands The Mysterious Wheels and hKippers.
