Here’s your 90’s Video of the Day: Marcy Playground - Sex and Candy

Because we love ‘em all. Here’s your 90’s Video of the Day

Marcy Playground - Sex and Candy

The video for this song has been given a lot of credit for having elements of surrealism and even deep psychological connotations. The latter, furthers the narrative that the video has Sigmund Freud-esque concepts in juxtaposition with the lyrics. In the video, we see a spider roaming around the head of singer and songwriter of “Sex and Candy,” John Wozniak, in a Dali inspired checkerboard mountain range. John’s Father was a developmental psychologist and said the video represented a wet dream and holy moly are there a lot of layers in this paragraph.

Often we hear from artists that a song that comes together in less than an hour, which is the case for “Sex and Candy,” is a really just a stream of consciousness. John may have only been able to understand what the song actually meant in hindsight. The title of “Sex and Candy,” is pretty literal; a roommate of John’s college girlfriend had entered their room after some alone time together and commented that the room smelled like “sex and candy.” John thought the concept was quirky and held onto it so long that once Marcy Playground was a band, it had finally found a place to live. John’s current stance on the song’s meaning? It’s just a classic love song.
